Can I protect a jetty or pier from oil spill?
Background:
The marine terminal has no dedicated shore base for equipment and experiences approximately 2 loading/unloading operations per month. The location experiences high winds, small waves (up to 1m)
For loading/unloading operations only 1 shoreside operator is present. Due to time and cost restraints deployment time for pollution response equipment is less than 10 minutes.
Objective:
To provide an effective containment system that is permanently installed whilst only requiring minimal operator input to apply to the vessels once the docking procedures are complete.
Upon completion of the fuel transfer the containment system should not impede the vessel from departing the terminal.
The containment system should also successfully secure the fuel transfer operation at all stages of tide, drift, wind and waves.
Solution:
The system that was supplied consisted of a pair of Foam Filled Sentinel Booms with fixed VikoSeal hammerheads mounted mid-way. This created a Primary Containment Zone of approximately 25m x 5m. The booms were fitted with hoist lifting points and the dock was installed with hand operated davit lifts at each end of the boom and one central point of each boom.
The boom controls are linked to a single electrical compressor. The booms remain in the water for 9 months of the year (spring, summer, fall) and the system is lifted and stored on the dock platform for 3 months over winter.
Connection of hoses and inflation of the VikoSeal Hammerheads takes a single operator approximately 10 minutes. A visual check is made every hour during the transfer to reset the boom in position (if required) and this takes a maximum of 2 minutes per check.
