There are many old legacy waste oil pits located around the world from oil production and industrial processes. The size of the pits varies considerably from small to very large and can be lined or unlined. The pits can contain waste oil as well as other waste products and over time the contents weather and the light ends evaporate, leaving a crust or heavy waste residue.

These waste oil pits are an environmental hazard and remedial work is necessary to stop toxic hydrocarbons spreading into the surrounding environment causing hazardous pollution.
